As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of producing polished work, craftsmanship becomes more—not less—important.

Craftsmanship in the Age of AI

I spend a great deal of time thinking about artificial intelligence. I use it. I enjoy it. Some of the most intellectually engaging conversations I've had this year have been with AI assistants. Yet their growing capabilities have also made me think more deeply about craftsmanship.

I've always been drawn to things that are carefully made. The precise stitching inside a beautifully constructed garment. A photograph composed so thoughtfully that moving one element would diminish it. A meal prepared with extraordinary care. The quiet satisfaction of recognizing that someone cared enough to refine details others might easily overlook.

Recently, I reworded my Instagram bio: Romanticizing reality, selectively. Three simple words but with the underlying philosophy of something I value—not escaping ordinary life, but paying closer attention to it. That same instinct—to notice what could be clearer, calmer, more thoughtful, or more beautiful before declaring something finished—is also how I think about craftsmanship.

Perhaps that is why AI has made me think about it so much. These tools are remarkably good at accelerating the first draft, but determining whether that draft says anything worth reading still requires human judgment. That is where discernment becomes essential: knowing what to refine, what to remove, and what deserves to remain.

Technology will continue to expand what we can create; craftsmanship will remain a measure of how thoughtfully we choose to create it.
